Pictured here is the 7 1/2 inch
barrel .44 caliber Colt revolver that was originally used by Stuart
Whitman in the Cimarron Strip series. The gun is an authentic
nickel plated Colt and it is still in great condition. The hammer
on the pistol was actually molded and angled to a right angle
so that when Marshal Crown drew his gun,
the hammer would go to the cocked position
much quicker and easier. I must say that it was a real treat to
hold and handle the actual gun that was used by Jim Crown.
Displayed here is the .44 Colt
holstered in a gun rig that was made by the world famous "Master
Holster Maker of Hollywood", Arvo Ojala. This rough-out leather
version of the Ojala gun rig was not the actual holster that was
used in Cimarron Strip, but rather a rig that was personally made
for and given to Stuart Whitman. For those of you who have really
watched Cimarron Strip very closely, you will notice that Jim
Crown actually used two different gun rigs (both of which were
made by Arvo Ojala). One of the gun rigs was used only one time
and that was is the episode of "Battleground."
That particular rig had 25 bullet loops, which went almost all
the way around the belt, as
compared to the gun rig that was used in
the remainder of the series, which had only six bullet loops located
in the front of the belt. The quality of the patented Arvo Ojala
gun rig is second to none. It has stood (and still stands) for
many years as the benchmark of superior quality and workmanship
for the majority of the gun rigs that have been used in virtually
every Hollywood Western. The most famous Ojala gun rig was most
likely the one
that was worn by Richard Boone
as the black clothed gun-for-hire Paladin in "Have Gun
Will Travel." I can definitely attest to the quality
of these gun rigs, as I have two of them myself. They range in
price from $300 to $500 each and are well worth it.
This is the real badge that was
worn in Cimarron Strip by Stuart Whitman. At the end of the series,
the badge was
placed in a clear acrylic display
cube and presented to Stuart Whitman. The light scratches that
you see in the photo are those located on the acrylic coating.
Pictured
here are the saddle and saddlebags that were used by U.S. Marshal
Jim Crown. These were made of ultra heavy grade custom tooled
leather (I am not sure as to who the saddlemaker is) and saddled
on Stuart's horse "Stockings". Although both pieces
are over 33 years old and were vigorously used in the series,
they are in remarkably good condition. In episode number five,
entitled "The
Hunted", there is an instance where Marshal Crown is
standing in the Wayfarer's Inn kitchen talking with Dulcey, and
you can see a very good close-up of the tooling that is displayed
on the saddlebags. Also, there were actually two different saddles
that
were
used in the series. The one that is pictured here was a bit bigger
in size and had more elaborate and detailed tooling in the leather,
and it was also the saddle that matched the saddlebags. Both of
these pieces were also given to Stuart Whitman when the Cimarron
Strip series ended.
Many of the other items
that were used by Marshal Crown in Cimarron Strip, like his leather
vest, pants, shirt, hat, other holsters, and boots were given
as donations to various charites and functions by Stuart Whitman.
